"I want to give away FREE safety and self-defense tips to Pittsburgh area residents"

Hey Pittsburgh, self-defense is your right and responsibility! PittsburghSelfDefense.com will serve to give Pittsburgh residents safety and self-defense tips absolutely free. These tips are important for everyone, whether you've studied martial arts like karate, kickboxing, kung fu or mma for years or you've never taken a self-defense class in your life.

PittsburghSelfDefense.com is owned and operated by Pittsburgh Martial Arts & Boxing Academy (formerly Martial Arts Academy of Pittsburgh), founded in 1979. It is one of the few schools in the area that has been around for that long and the reason it has survived is that what we teach works and we know that for a fact - we've had students survive life or death situations because of what they've been taught here.

While this site can't replace training, we would like to share as much of our knowledge with you as possible. Keep reading to find out more about this site and then sign up for your FREE tips.

PittsburghSelfDefense.com is a FREE resource.

This is pretty simple. Sign up and you will receive safety and self-defense tips via email. We respect your privacy and will NEVER give your information to a third party. Every email you receive will have an unsubscribe option at the bottom.

This site is owned and operated by Pittsburgh Martial Arts & Boxing Academy, which does sell various types of training. We will provide links for you to click if you are interested in making a purchase on one of our other sites but you are not required to buy anything to get your self-defense tips.

These self-defense tips are FREE. Pittsburgh Martial Arts & Boxing Academy owner, Bob Barnum, has resolved to benefit the local community. He has made donations, given free self-defense seminars, held fundraisers, etc. This website is an extension of that effort.

 PittsburghSelfDefense.com is a starting point.

Online tips and advice are great for becoming more aware and having a more proactive approach to self-defense. However, that is not enough in and of itself. This website is intended to jump start or augment a realistic self-defense training program, NOT REPLACE ONE. Get some training.

Here's a few to get you started (more to be added)...

  • PRACTICE BEING AWARE - Thinking about what might happen and taking steps to minimize that risk is the greatest self-defense in the world. When people tell me stories of them being attacked, a lot of times it starts out something like this, "So, I'm walking by myself down this dark alley and I can't see too good cuz I'm kinda drunk…"

I wish I was exaggerating this but some of the things I hear out of people's mouths just makes me cringe. How many ways can you limit your risk in a given situation? If we use the above example, I'd say don't walk by yourself… down a dark alley… and don't drink yourself blind when no one's watching out for you. This is a pretty extreme example, but you can and should apply this concept of awareness any time, all the time, to every situation.

  • WATCH YOUR DRINK - So, this one is personal to me. In my former life as a bouncer, I have actually caught men trying (and in one case, succeeding in trying) to slip drugs into women's drinks AND IT DOESN'T JUST HAPPEN TO WOMEN!. It really happens and the results can be devastating. You need to know that not only can it happen but it can happen anywhere, anytime of the day, while you are with anyone and the only person who can ensure that you don't become a victim of this crime is you. It doesn't matter if you're at a bar doing shots or at a friend of a friend's house sipping a pop. Your drink should never be out of your sight. If you go to the bathroom, take it with you. If it's on a table, it should either be in your sight or your hand should be resting on it. If it's left your sight for any amount of time, dump it. This may seem a bit extreme but you should make it a habit.
